Aug 19, 2007  I own a Macbook C2D 2Ghz with Superdrive bought in Germany and so with a German keyboard layout (OSX is the International version). Now I have bought a new Apple keyboard with a JIS layout since I am bilingual and also write Japanese frequently. But somehow I cannot get the keyboard to type Japanese (kana mode) and even the eisuu mode is messed up.

Hi all, I experienced same symptom on macOS Sierra, Mac Pro 2009, HHKB pro type S (JIS). In my case, I cannot remember exact version number though, it occurs regardless of the Karabiner-Elements's version including current version. So, I guess that some state of MacOS may be related to this problem, such as external keyboard connected or not at boot time or you have connected an ASCII keyboard or not and so on. Anyway, I looked at Karabiner-Element and Karabiner's source code, and I managed to avoid this problem in a very ugly manner. If you don't mind it, try this! I believe this is almost equivalent to Karabiner's SetKeyboardType KeyboardType::JISMACBOOK2008. Apply attached patch to Karabiner-Element's source tree.

Kill karabinereventdispatcher process. (Karabiner automatically reboot it). Quit Karabiner and restart it is not enough. It looks karabinereventdispatcher is still running after quit Karabiner.

Rodrigo Kumpera 2011-09-15 08:40:21 UTC Since this bug is been used to aggregate all duplicates, it's worth posting here the known workaround. Go to Settings - Language & Text - Input Sources. Enable 'Allow a different one for each document'. Enable 'Show Input menu in menu bar'. Select the 'U.S.' Input source in addition to the one you already had.

Now, when using MD, switch to 'U.S.' In the input source method. Here it's the first one on the left of the clock. I'm using OSX Lion and support for per-app input source is buggy so more often than not it switches MD back to my default keymap.

Which is annoying but there's probably nothing that can be done. BTW, if the per-app input source issue I'm having is actually a gtk+ bug and it's much easier to fix than the whole keymap thing, it might make sense to only fix it.
